I have always loved painting and drawing and one of my early memories is of winning a child’s cookery set in a national painting competition at the age of 5. In my early teens I also had some success in the BBC TV programme “Sketch Club” where 4 of my pictures were displayed. However during the early years of my marriage, home and family took first place and left little time for art. In latter years, particularly since my retirement, I have found even more pleasure in painting.
Although I’ve had no formal training in art my aim, as always, is to try to improve my techniques and learn new ones – often from my artist friends. I enjoy trying all kinds of different media although I mainly use watercolour and pastel. I get pleasure from painting a wide variety of subjects including animals and buildings but, for me, the wonderful thing about art is the pure enjoyment which is simultaneously relaxing yet totally absorbing.
I exhibit widely across Cumbria and am a member of Carlisle & Cumbria Artists as well as Carlisle & Border Art Society. I am always happy to consider commissions and have carried out a number of these, mainly for animal paintings.
